We have treated topics on How to get wisdom and the different types of wisdom especially that which comes from Heaven or God and the one on Human Knowledge.
Today, we are going to write about some instruments that will enable us to acquire this wisdom. The first and major instrument we want to mention here is the Bible- which contains the word of God.
What is this Bible all about?
The Bible is the inspired, inerrant word of God written through divine inspiration. 2 Tim.3:16 stated that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. Let’s look at the New Living Translation (NLT version of this scripture to fully understand it). It says”All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to Teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right
How does it teach us all that we need to know and how does it correct us?
It is by studying what is contained therein. Joshua1:8 says; “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
As per the above passage, you are not just to study or meditate upon its contents but you must observe to do according to all that is written therein. Doing the will of God is wisdom in action. When we study the Word of God (especially The Bible; The Torah and other religious books – they direct our lives positively.
Let’s hear what the Bible says concerning that in 2Tim.2:15; “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”. But shun profane and vain babblings; for they will increase unto more ungodliness
When we study, we learn from Our Master, Our Maker. We will know the mind of God concerning certain issues of life and we will know how to refrain from those things that are not pleasing unto God. Like when i was a child, learning the ten commandment (See my write-up on it); and other important lessons from the Bible was paramount to us especially before baptism and thereafter, you go through the Catechism and is like everyday you want to engulf yourself in those learning.
Knowing and doing what is right comes from God. King Solomon with all his wisdom and wealth stated in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 as follows; “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Fearing God and obeying His commandments (doing His will) is wisdom. Without fearing God, how will you keep His commandments and or do His will. When we study, it will enable us to know what to do.
The Psalmist stated in Chapter 119:9-11 that: How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word. With my whole heart I have sought You, Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you” We can only hide the word of God in our heart when we study it, meditate on it day and night as God personally directed Joshua to do in the verse quoted above.
Before we study, what are we expected to do?
Before any study takes place, we have to pray or ask for divine inspiration into the Word as David did all the time. Psalms 25:4 -5: “Shew me thy ways, O Lord teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me; for thou art the God of my Salvation; on thee do I wait all the day”.
Asking for direction and divine inspiration opens our heart to the leading of the spirit while studying. In addition to guiding our paths; revealing His will and ways to us then as He said to Joshua, we shall be successful and prosperous in all we do. Successes and prosperity lies in the study and obedience to God’s Words written in the Big Book of Wisdom known as The Bible. It is the Number 1 Best Sellers ever found.
In many occasions of Christ Ministry, He could be seen going into solitary to pray. He invested so much into it so He could be strengthened by God His Father to be able to accomplish the task of redeeming mankind.
Even before his crucifixion at the Gethsemane, He prayed to the extent that His sweat became blood. Even if we may not be able to pray that way, let’s appreciate God for all His benefits upon us so that His fear in our hearts will turn around this world and make it a better place for us all.
See Luke 22:39-46 says ; “Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples followed Him. When He came to the place, He said to them, Pray that you may not enter into temptation” – Pray for guidance and protection
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed saying, “Father if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.
The Bible said “Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground….” Do we have any excuse if certain things befall us even when we feel we have prayed enough and are in right standing with God? Jesus is our example in life. If it could happen to Him, so it can happen to anybody.
In one of such times too, the disciples requested He teach them how to pray as recorded in Luke 11:1-13 which says: “Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” So He said to them,
When you pray, say: Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name…. What I want to stress here is that when we pray we should believe that God has done it. Because Jesus question us here that which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him. Friend, lend me three loaves for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey and I have nothing to set before him; and he will answer from within and say, “Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you? He said:
I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.
We must never give up in asking because He who knows and see the heart knows the importance or the purpose for which we are asking for a particular thing. Prayer and believing that God is at the top of such situation should gladden our heart and take away any burdens from us.
Studying, praying and meditating upon the word of God will help us to stay focused and strengthened to achieve those things God has put in place for us. Remember Christ always pray for the will of God to be done not His own will but God’s will, that’s when success will be ours.
